Vale Mrs Neilma Gantner

June 17th, 2015

Early on Monday morning, 15 June 2015, Mrs Neilma Gantner, 92 years young, passed away peacefully. She was surrounded by her family and friends in a place she loved, her home in Bermagui, New South Wales. Mrs Gantner, daughter of Sidney and Merlyn Myer and sister of Kenneth Myer, Sidney ‘Bails’ Myer and Lady Southey, was born in San Francisco and later graduated with degrees from the University of Melbourne and Stanford. A published poet, novelist and short story writer Mrs Gantner was mother to Carrillo and Vallejo, grandmother to Cassandra, Vallejo, Dashiell, Yannis and Carlos and great grandmother to August, Salinger and Rueben.

Mrs Gantner, a long-term resident of Bermagui, was devoted to the region and founded the Four Winds Festival there in 1991.  Following its inception, The Four Winds Festival quickly earned a reputation for excellence whilst the organisation continues to invest heavily in year-round work with the local community encouraging creative and musical practice in the region.

Mrs Gantner was a founding member and Life Governor of The Myer Foundation. She was a member of the Sidney Myer Fund’s Arts and Humanities Committee and co-founder of the Kenneth Myer Asian Performing Theatre Series at the Arts Centre Melbourne. She was a committed and inspired philanthropist throughout her lifetime, a citizen of the world and a friend to many.

Her inspiration, guidance, wit and wisdom have touched us all and she will be greatly missed. Our heartfelt thoughts are with the Gantner family at this time.
