Carrillo Gantner AC Steps Down as Chairman of Sidney Myer Fund
June 30th, 2020
On 4 June 2020 Carrillo Gantner chaired his final meeting of the Sidney Myer Fund, calling curtains on his stewardship of his 16-year performance as Chairman of the Australian philanthropic institution.
Carrillo was appointed Chairman of Sidney Myer Fund in 2004, having been a Trustee of the Fund since 1991.
At the June 2020 meeting of the Sidney Myer Fund, incoming Chairman Andrew Myer AM, reflected on Carrillo’s contribution noting that Carrillo had presided over an estimated 3,000 grants (including the Centenary Grants program), three CEOs and six strategic plans and outlasted nine Australian Prime Ministers. Carrillo’s leadership has been characterised by wisdom, curiosity, compassion, intellect and diligence.
There is perhaps no more illustrious example of Carrillo’s leadership of the Fund than the instigation of AsiaTOPA. This stunning, multi-art form collection of works over a three-month long festival explored the connections between contemporary Australia and Asia and their growing diasporas. The festival was created by the Sidney Myer Fund with a $2.1 million grant in 2013 and delivered by lead partner Arts Centre Melbourne. In 2017, that investment returned $20.4 million of economic benefit to Victorians, employed 1,070 artists that year and hundreds of office, front of house and food and beverage staff from 47 organisations and cultural venues in the greater Melbourne region. Beyond the breadth and depth of its quantified impact in the community though, its most important outcome was the bringing together of our global neighbourhood to share stories, break bread and learn a little more about one another.
Carrillo’s counsel and wisdom will not be lost to Myer family philanthropy as he continues in his role as a Life Governor of The Myer Foundation.
Footnote: Alongside his service to the community in the Fund, Carrillo also served on the board of The Myer Foundation, as Director (1991), Vice President (1992 – 1999) and President (2000 – 2009).
