Sidney Myer Fund and The Myer Foundation to support those impacted by the bushfire emergency

January 24th, 2020

Australia is facing one of the most catastrophic bushfire seasons in its history. The duration, intensity, and destruction caused by these fires is unprecedented, and all of us at the Sidney Myer Fund and The Myer Foundation are shocked and distressed by what we have seen.

We are pleased to announce that the Sidney Myer Fund and The Myer Foundation will be supporting those impacted by the bushfires. Our response includes a $500,000 commitment from The Sidney Myer Fund to be directed towards bushfire recovery efforts and funding from The Myer Foundation towards mental health and wellbeing support.

While these commitments respond to the current crisis, we maintain our focus on the longer term impacts of climate change, a contributing factor to the considerable current challenges and the challenges that the coming decades will bring. The five-year strategic plan of the Sidney Myer Fund and The Myer Foundation has climate change as one of its two abiding themes (the other being growing inequality) and our major initiatives include:

  • founding and providing ongoing support of ClimateWorks, a not-for-profit that accelerates the transition to net zero emissions for sectors, organisations and the whole economy
  • the exclusive focus of the Sustainability & Environment Program on climate action
  • The Myer Foundation’s $5 million commitment, in partnership with and matched by The Ian Potter Foundation, to establish a Water and Catchment Policy Centre. The Water Centre will address the sustainable management of Australia’s freshwater resources, recognising the risk that climate change and a growing population place on the future of Australia’s waterways and catchments
  • a commitment to invest 100 percent of The Myer Foundation’s portfolio in environmentally and socially responsible funds by November 2022 (from the current 50 percent investment).

In closing, we acknowledge the unprecedented nature of the bushfires and we applaud the extraordinary work of the people and organisations managing the ongoing emergency. Our thoughts remain with all those affected by this terrible crisis.
