Sidney Myer Creative Fellowships Now Tax-Free

June 6th, 2016

First awarded in 2011, the Sidney Myer Creative Fellowships provide unrestricted grants of $160,000 over two years to individual artists, arts managers and thought leaders. Specific outcomes for the Fellowships are not required.

Fellowships are awarded on the basis of outstanding talent and exceptional courage.

NOMINATIONS FOR THE 2016 SIDNEY MYER CREATIVE FELLOWSHIPS CLOSE AT MIDNIGHT (END OF THE DAY) AEST 7 AUGUST 2016.

The Fellowships are intended for artists in their ‘early mid-career’ – to be eligible, nominees must be in the first seven to fifteen years of their creative practice.

In response to an application made by the Sidney Myer Fund, the Australian Tax Office has declared that any payments received by Sidney Myer Creative Fellows as part of the Sidney Myer Fund’s Fellowship program will not be assessed as income. The ruling is back dated to 1 July 2015.

That is, in effect, the Fellowships are now tax free.

Carrillo Ganter AO, Chairman of the Sidney Myer Fund, said

“This is a good outcome for recipients of Fellowships, but more broadly it suggests that there remain further unexplored avenues to maximise support for the arts in Australia. We should be doing more to support arts and culture in Australia – not less.

Our system has embedded within it mechanisms to support the arts. By making the most of those mechanisms do we maximise our support for artists.”

Detailed eligibility information regarding the Fellowships can be found on The Myer Foundation and Sidney Myer Fund’s website.
