Announcing ‘A New Approach’

August 8th, 2017

The Myer Foundation, the Tim Fairfax Family Foundation and the Keir Foundation are pleased to announce that the Australian Academy of the Humanities and Newgate Communications have been engaged to deliver the project known as A New Approach.

In December 2016, the Foundations called for expressions of interest to address Australia’s absence of a public, expert, independent voice capable of championing investment and return in arts and culture. Defending and promoting the benefit of intellectual and creative life as a critical crucible of the national future is proving to be increasingly difficult. Australia needs an informed, independent entity which has the necessary resources and public authority to advance a coherent, comprehensive policy position from which we might build better political and institutional settings and allied public commentary. The project aims to address this critical need.

A New Approach will move forward under the direction of a yet-to-be appointed Program Director, who will work with the Foundations, the Academy and Newgate Communications.

The Academy is Australia’s national body for the humanities. It is one of the nation’s four Learned Academies – independent organisations established to encourage excellence in their respective fields and to provide expertise and advice at public, institutional and government levels. The Academy undertakes research to inform policy development and encourages and supports engagement across the cultural sector. The Academy promotes excellence in the Australian cultural sphere through annual events and workshops, and invests in the future through a grants and awards program.

Newgate brings together Australia’s most experienced team in government relations and regulatory affairs. Created in 2013 around a core team that has worked together for two decades, Newgate has extensive connections across business and industry, the media and the political spectrum. They have worked on some of Australia’s most complex and challenging corporate and government projects, harnessing their expertise in community engagement approaches. Newgate works for a number of arts sector clients and is a Foundation Partner of the Canberra Writers Festival.

Egon Zehnder have agreed to undertake the recruitment process for the Program Director role in a pro-bono capacity and their generous commitment to this project is deeply appreciated. Fiona McGauchie will oversee the process for Egon Zehnder and, should you wish to discuss the Program Director role with Fiona, please follow up with her at Fiona.McGauchie@egonzehnder.com.

Further details on the project will be made when announcing the appointment of the Program Director.
